Pretty Party Finds

Maybe I am dreaming about my birthday in September. Mom says I used to start planning my next birthday party the day after I had one. I spend the majority of my blog reading time on event blogs these days...enjoy some recent finds.

This cake is dreamy. Sprinkles are so magical, and I am in love with gentle light pink these days.

Yes, these diy drink umbrellas are so very lovely!

These tapers sure are purdy and super serious about celebrating.

    Couples Wedding Shower Invitation...Party Tomorrow!

(Double click to see it larger!)

We are hosting a Couples Wedding Shower this weekend for our friends Sara and Matt. This is the invitation that I designed. (I put it on a purple background for you to see better, but it was sent with no border.) We cut out felt to put on the mustache, placed them in brown envelopes that open on the end, included a popsicle stick for folks to cut and attach to their mustaches, and sealed them with a circular white sticker. Ryan wrote the addresses on the front in his smart handwriting, and I wrote our return address in a circle around the white round sticker.

I'm super excited to put all the things I have planned and prepared into place tomorrow.

    I love parties.

    Party on my mind

Just thinking festive thoughts, as my best friend's birthday is coming up. Thought I'd do a party round up of party things.

An entire magazine about parties with the tagline "the art of merry making?" Yes, please!

I love the idea of wrapping beautiful pipe cleaners around the base of wine glasses! How festive and pretty!

Sparkly monogram party for the guest of honor.

    Cocktails for every month.

And because I would like to have a wine and cheese party sometime, how to create the perfect cheese plate.

Shower Hour: How to Celebrate the Best thing that Ever Happened to Your Brother

My brother is getting married in a month! To a beautiful, sweet, fun, smart woman! Anyway, I helped make some decorations for the shower in Tulsa this past weekend. The photos were a little darker than I'd hoped, but I think you can see enough detail.
Starting from the upper right corner and work counter-clockwise:
    • This is a table decoration. I cut circles out of brown paper and placed the fancy circle design on top with a glue stick. I found the round design as a printable at Martha Stewart Weddings. I used an exacto-knife to cut slits for the ribbon to go through. I eyed the cut placement, but I used a small piece of cardboard as a guide for length of the cut. Then I strong ribbon through. I think using bigger ribbon might be a nice thing to try next time I make these.
    • This I did not make. It was a "Blushing Bride Martini" that the lovely folks at the Chalkboard prepared for guests. They said it was basically a cosmopolitan with raspberry liqueur and sherbet. So good!
    • You cannot see this perfectly, but it is a glassine bag that I ordered from Clearbags.com. I chopped some paper to the correct size to fold over the top of the bag, and I fixed it to the bag with staples...next time, I think I will add a special note inside the bag or see if I can get slightly more clear bags. I put some treats we purchased at Williams and Sonoma inside.
    • This is a sheet of paper cut to fit inside a small photo album/scrapbook for the bride-to-be to keep. I designed the look and added three possible topics for guests to write about- "One thing I know about love...," "Something you should know about Rob...," or "The key to marriage is..." Guests could check the topic they wanted and share their insight. We read answers out loud later in the party, but I think it was a great way to give guests something to do when they first arrived. Some of the replies made me cry-others laugh. Everyone seemed to enjoy it.
    • Finally, this is the chair decoration for the bride-to-be's seat. It is basically the same as the first item I described.
I'd like to note that I use my mom's Creative Memories tools to do most of my cutting, etc. They are super helpful and easy to use.

    Party Links!

I love parties because they are awesome, but also because they symbolize our human need to make things special. You throw a beautiful soiree, and you tell your guests you care about them. I've run across some great party ideas recently:

I would like to attend this party. So pretty and pink. Champagne with straws! It's a do.

Twig & Thistle offers up free printables and an awesome Oscar Party. I may use those designs for my birthday party next year...I already have some glassine envelopes, what to put inside?
Making a birthday cake? Want to spice up one that you bought? Martha Stewart's Crafts Department shows you how to make your own candles! Yes, Way!

This glitzy table has a lot of translatable elements for bridal showers or birthday bruncheons.

    Balloon on Gift

It was another friend's birthday last weekend. This particular friend is funny and upbeat, so we thought tying a balloon to his gift was just the right touch.

I brought the brown twine with me to the grocery store to attach to the balloon.

    It's friendly.

Here is how Martha Stewart uses balloons as a wedding invitation.

    Birthday Celebration Dinner

It was my friend Sara Harper's birthday this week. I've known her since 6th grade; old friends are a special treat. She was with me through all my formative years and life benchmarks. We don't see each other as much because of jobs and life, but I was super excited when I answered the door and we had the same haircut (dark long hair with bangs straight above the eyebrows).  While being grown ups keeps us from hanging out as much as we used to, there is some cosmic-fashion wavelength where we will always be joined. All that to say, she is a friend to be celebrated.

Sara and her fiance came over to dinner. Ryan whipped up some tasty stir-fry, and I set a table I hoped would make her feel special. Birthdays are the best in my mind. I brought out all my favorite things for her: my Greek great grandmother's table cloth, my blue cake plate with birds on it, our lovely china, shiny gold napkins, vintage polka dot wine glasses, sparkly glitter candles (The pictures don't do them justice.), and as a final touch-- brass animals to sit in front of each plate!

And I picked up decadent chocolate cupcakes from Nibbles between 81st and 91st on Memorial. Fabulous!

Also dessert napkins I got at Lambrusco'z in the southeast corner shopping center at 41st and Peoria. They say "The day you were born, the world had to make room for a little more fancy."

    Birthday Brunch

It was our friends Jarrel and Adam's birthdays this past week, so we hosted a Sunday Birthday Brunch. Vintage table cloth from my mom. Happy Birthday banner with Martha Stewart Downloads and a banner with celebrity couple name "Jadam" on it. I used a craft sponge to apply the glue which allowed my letters to be more uniform in width.

    Menu:
    • Ham that Ryan dressed up with an orange honey marinade, along with cheesy egg casserole and pancakes- Thanks Ryan!
    • Fruit salad and muffins with the cutest little signs in them to identify the flavor- Thanks Whitney!
    • An angel food cake birthday cake by Caitlin!

    Dressing up sounds like fun.

This sounds phenomenal: get a bunch of ladies together with all their favorite clothes and accessories in tow and get glamed up- big hair, make-up make-up make-up, and a photo shoot. The answer is yes. Yes, please.

Here is the inspiration: Ban.do (my favorite headband and other accessories line)

Sausage Cheese Balls Make the Party

Mom makes sausage cheese balls when we visit her in Houston. They are also the ultimate party food. Oh yum. Bisquick recipe, friends. Google it, look on the back of the box, buy the cookbook, do what you must, but make these balls.

Nothing says party like a pie in a jar

I was so excited when Cup of Jo showed the link to these awesome pies in jars. Ryan and I decided to try it ourselves.

Ryan lined mini canning jars with pre-made pie dough, plopped the filling in (cherry and apple!) and folded the dough over on top.
We baked them for 30 minutes or so at 475. I guess there is some controversy over whether the glass will break while baking, but our consensus was that these jars were made for boiling in hot water, so we'd risk it.

I put saran wrap on top and tied some green and white twine around the jars to secure it.

If you don't want to make the mess or you want perfectly curated top crust, the price is right for ordering them at All Jarred Up's Etsy store.

*Also, I called a friend to ask if she wanted to make them with me, and she said "All I want in the world is to make tiny pies in jars, but I have to do the complete opposite of that- I have to supervise a meth screening." Ha! I hadn't thought of that before, but those two things just might truly be each other's exact opposite.

    Bowls to Match our China

This photo has a weird reflection going on, but I wanted to show you something else I've been thinking about. Bowls. Ryan and I registered for bowls to match our china, but while we got all the place settings, we didn't get any bowls! I was surfing around, and our bowls are $49 each, plus it looks like Macy's and Dillards have ceased to sell them. I saw this china bowl from Charter Club below at Macy's the other day on sale for $9.99.

They would be so pretty with our china...filled with some of Ryan's homemade soups or pastas in it.

P.S. Why did our bigger department stores in town stop selling the china we picked!?!? Man.

Greek Great Grandmother and Setting the Table

There is nothing like setting a random weekday night's dinner table with some of your finest. The evening seriously could have gone the sit-on-the-couch-and-fend-off-the-dog route, but we invited a good friend over, Ryan made the most delicious roasted vegetable stack (eggplant, onions, tomatoes, red peppers...) and marina sauce, and I decided to do my part.

I cleared our kitchen table and used my great Greek grandmother Georgia's tablecloth and napkins she embroidered herself (Just some of the bounty my mom gave to me when she was preparing to move.). The pictures do not quite do it justice- it's a lighter more elegant peachy color that looks so perfect with our apple green and gold china.

I never knew Georgia, but I am certain we would have loved one another.

P.S. I used to be so afraid to use a tablecloth for fear it would get spilled on. I've learned some quality stain removal techniques- don't worry- you can get it out- use your beautiful things! It makes you feel so nice to sit at a set table, and you don't have to fend off the puppy!

    Birthday Card with Fuzz

It was my beautiful sister-in-law Ellen's birthday yesterday. Ellie! I am so glad you're my sister!

I purchased some Martha Stewart yellow fluff to put on her card. It's like glitter, but matte and soft like fuzz or felt. What I learned is that I should try painting on the glue with a brush to have a little more control over the flow of glue. With that said though, I was excited for Ellen to feel her name in fancy fuzz.

Dinner Party with Gorgeous Flower Arrangements

I went to the most lovely dinner party on Friday night, and I did the worst thing-- I forgot my camera. Well, I borrowed and apparently misused the host and hostess' camera (hence the slightly blurry second photo). I was generously surprised with a take-home vase, so I took some photos of it at home. Enjoy!

Setting a beautiful table makes your guests feel so welcomed and valued. Small touches matter if you have time to make them. Those are cranberries filling the vase. Such a beautiful arrangement.

Diane, the hostess, took an icepick to the apple and put the rose in the hole. She says an apple has enough water in it to keep the flower for 4 days. Pretty cool. She's an Oklahoma Master Gardener. Also cool.

I think my Thanksgiving table will look just like hers this year.

    Simple Pasta

This pasta from Cup of Jo reminds me of Ryan. He makes the most excellent dishes out of simple things. See the recipe here.

    Halloween Recap

Spiderwebs on the porch, a paper banner I made and pumpkins!

Mom's Halloween tablecloth, cornbread shaped like pumpkins (thank you Maggie!), cakes with Martha Stewart powdered sugar stencils on them, chili fixin's, and orange sherbet and champagne punch. Did I mention the specimen jar with brains in yellow preserving fluid?

Also, do not own glitter candles and not use them. This is a standard rule for true living.

Outdoor movie showing Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin.

    6 Feet of Sandwich

$25 for a sandwich just short of the height of my husband. Yes, please and thank you Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market. This was exactly the way to celebrate Ryan's Birthday...

This was too (The sandwich was this past Saturday. What follows is from the actual birthday celebrated with his family):

New guitar: the ultimate 26th birthday gift, at least for this man.

    Some amazing cake.

    A little wishing on candles.

    Yo' Momma.

Pops. (If you are reading this, Tom, I meant to say Mr. Daly.)

And a couple of sweet sisters.

This all equals one happy and clapping man.

I was there too...I just hold the camera.
